Trackside Support Engineer

Jack Seddon

Jack graduated from Cranfield University in 2019 with a MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering. Alongside his studies he worked as a Data Engineer for several GT championships as well as TCR. In 2019 he became a Trackside Support Engineer for Goodyear where he helps race teams in WEC and ELMS optimise tyre performance throughout endurance races.

James Knapton

James Knapton has enjoyed a rich career in Formula 1, as the Head of Vehicle Science at Force India, Sauber, Manor F1 teams and at Red Bull Advanced Technologies. James then moved to Hitech where he was the Chief Engineer - Performance. He now works as Head of Performance Analysis at Andretti Racing!

Hiroshi Imai

Hiroshi spent over 18 years at Bridgestone developing F1 tyres. In 2009 he moved to McLaren as Principal engineer, working trackside to help McLaren maximise tyre performance. In 2017 he became Chief Race Engineer. His F1 tyre expertise is renowned throughout the pitlane. *Please note due to racing commitments this is a recorded session.

Module Programme*:

Session 1 – Formula One tyres

Discover how F1 engineers analyse tyre performance by calculating tyre compound deltas, degradation and wear rates. Understand the importance of tyre models in F1 and how these are utilised trackside to maximise performance.  


Session 2 – Tyre Fundamentals

Understand the behaviour of rubber and how tyres generate grip through the contact patch.


Session 3 – Endurance Tyres

Find out the tactics behind optimising tyre temperatures, pressures, wear and degradation during 6, 12 and 24 hour races. 


Session 4 - Rally and Rallycross Tyres

Discover how Rally and Rallycross tyres are designed to cope with tarmac, gravel and snow surfaces as well as jumps and drifting.
